This book begins, “to engineer is human!...Sometimes we succeed—sometimes we fail.” Readers are introduced to 20 different feats and failures in engineering (some like the Tower of Pisa are actually deemed feat AND failure). Each chapter focuses on one of the feats/failures. I think the design of the book is especially appealing. Although the pages are packed with text boxes, detailed photos, captions and informative diagrams, these elements do not overwhelm the clear and descriptive main body of text. Some of the marvels include: the Eurotunnel, the Brooklyn Bridge, and Sydney Opera House. Some of the failures described: Chernobyl, the Challenger, and the South Fork Dam. The book ends with a description of Murphey’s Law—whatever might go wrong will go wrong, so question and test everything so that you can prevent failure!
