Description
Set during the Reconstruction Era we meet ten-year old Sugar who lives on the River Road sugar plantation on the banks of Mississippi. Slavery is over, but laboring in the fields doesn't make her feel free. Thankfully, Sugar finds her own fun with the help of Billy the plantation owner's son. When Chinese workers are brought in to help harvest the cane, she is able to learn from Beau and Master Liu about their traditions and culture. She, in turn, shares the ways of plantation life and soon realizes that she must be the one to bridge the cultural gap and bring the community together.
