Sister and brother, Annie and Rew live on the edge of Zebra Forest (consequently named because of it mix of white birch and chocolate oak) with their Gran. They live a disorganized, odd, unsupervised life. Gran is a hoarder who I think could be diagnosed with severe depression, but CAN be a great caregiver when she’s not shut up in her bedroom. All said, they seem to be happy in their own way. One night, a fugitive from the prison on the other side of Zebra Forest shows up and holds them hostage. While imprisoned, the children come to learn about their mysterious family history, a topic that has always been taboo with Gran.

Perfect for the classroom with strong literature connections to Treasure Island! Takes place during and references the Iran hostage crisis.
