In the pond, the mighty pond, the amoeba sleeps tonight—wait, amoeba?! That’s right, the newest, coolest, Twinkie eating, errr…hero is Squish, the amoeba. A spin-off from Babymouse, this clever graphic novel series already has a good fan base to work with. Just how amazing are the Holms’ siblings, you ask? Well, they managed to incorporate the issue of bullying, courage, friendship, and science (from one-celled organisms to global warming) into a graphic novel perfect for grades 2-5. The encouraging part for striving readers is that it’s not overwhelming.

Squish’s best friend, Pod, is trying to stop global warming and mooches of Squish to no end (the author even points out that Squish is a sucker). Then, there’s Peggy, the paramecium and the eternal optimist. These three are on their way to school, where Squish doesn’t pay attention anyway—lucky for him, he’s smart. Things take a turn for the worst when the trio is sent to detention for being late to school (Pod just HAD to wash his pseudopods at home) and they run into Lynwood, a very scary amoeba (class bully).

Lynwood decides he wants to eat Peggy (who is clueless about this) and Squish must figure out a way to stop him. Lynwood has the perfect solution—he wants to copy off of Squish’s science tests and Peggy then goes uneaten. Unfortunately, their science teacher catches on and gives Squish a warning. Does Squish stand up to Lynwood?! Does Peggy get consumed?! Find out when you read Squish #1: Super Amoeba by Jennifer and Matt Holm.
